A New Era of Pig Welfare
The RSPCA Assured has announced significant updates to its pig welfare standards, which are set to come into effect in March 2025 and 2026. These changes aim to further enhance the well-being of pigs across the industry.
Key Changes:
Split-Sexing:
Pigs will need to be separated by sex at an earlier age, specifically when they reach an average weight of 50kg. This change aims to reduce stress and aggression among pigs, particularly females (March 2026).
Transport and Slaughter Standards:
Cull sows and boars must be transported and slaughtered according to strict RSPCA standards including a RSPCA Assured-approved haulier, ensuring humane treatment throughout the process (March 2026).
Off-Site Lairaging:
The use of off-site lairage facilities will be restricted to emergency situations, emphasising the importance of minimising stress during transport.
Surplus Piglet Rearing Equipment:
The use of equipment designed to rear surplus piglets, such as rescue decks, will be prohibited except in emergency situations to protect the welfare of sick piglets.
What Does This Mean for Farmers?
While these changes represent a significant step forward for pig welfare, they also present challenges for farmers. To ensure compliance, it's crucial to:
Stay Informed:Â Keep up-to-date with the latest guidelines and regulations issued by the RSPCA Assured.
Seek Support:Â Utilize the resources and support offered by the RSPCA Assured to help you implement the new standards.
Invest in Infrastructure:Â Consider necessary infrastructure upgrades to meet the new requirements, such as improved housing and handling facilities.
Adopt Best Practices:Â Implement robust welfare practices, including regular monitoring, record-keeping, and staff training.
By embracing these changes, farmers can contribute to a more sustainable and ethical pig industry.
